CHEZ ROSE—HOLISTIC LIVING
HOME IS A HAVEN

In 2010, I almost died from stress. I was working as a communications strategist for the Government of Canada. My files were international security and Sub-Saharan Africa. I loved my job, but a toxic workplace made it unbearable. My doctor wanted to hospitalize me to rest. Imagine a prescription that removes you from society to bring your body back into balance. My symptoms filled up an entire page. It was vital.
As a single mother of one, I stayed at home.
Pumping gas in my car made me feel nauseous. I would black out. One day, I had forgotten the word for "tree." Always breaking dishes by accident, misplacing my keys, or getting injured, I had lost my mind-body coordination. I was insomniac. Depressed. Anxious. I had heart palpitations, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms were vertigo, migraines, skin conditions, and digestive issues. I was unable to speak, or read. I was in a serious burnout. My nervous system was ruling my entire body; my brain, my heart, my lungs—everything.

I am stubborn, and wanted healing. We all do. We seek that quick fix, whatever will appease us, and ease the pain. However, I knew there was something deeper, more profound. I didn't want a fast track program, I wanted to feel free—once and for all.
The human body needs time. There is a natural and undeniable sequence deep within. On a self-healing mission, I turned to the traditional, herbal, and spiritual teachings of my French-Congolese origins, and upbringing. I searched for the purest, most powerful foods. I pursued extensive studies in holistic nutrition, orthomolecular science, biochemistry, and anatomy, and over 500 hours of Yoga Teacher Training with Masters from India and Tibet. I am now inspired by the roots and universal principles of the healing arts, from African spirituality and herbalism to East Indian yogic sciences.
Nutrition is more than food.
Nourishment includes everything that has an impact on the body, on both conscious and subconscious levels. What surrounds us and what lies within us—physically, and emotionally—it all counts.
Everything we think and do becomes us. This is biology: the science of life and living organisms.
We often don't realize the physiological impact of our environment, emotions, and behaviour, until radical change needs to happen. We go up against a wall. We crash. The realization, the simple awareness that change must happen is key. It is the lighthouse in the storm. The pressure to change can steer us to safety. This is how we embark on a transformative journey.
Transformation is why we are here.

TRANSFORMATION
REFRESH YOUR LIFE
Born in Canada of French and Congolese origins, I am the eldest of three, and of a large extended family. Home has always been always a haven of sounds and flavours. Inspired by a diaspora of cultures from day one, home is where food, music, knowledge, and natural solutions from France, Congo-Brazzaville, and many other parts of the world, co-existed in harmony.
As an artist, it's been quite the journey. After graduating from the Fine Arts program at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada, I jumped into the corporate world, and inadvertently became an art director—a leader. I was 22. I've been managing creative services ever since, not realizing that the most important project, is myself.
My friends call me a multi-disciplinarian, and a fearless adventurer: In 1983, I danced with Karen Kain to honour Celia Franca, the founder of the National Ballet of Canada. I ran 200 and 400 meters, arrived first as a junior, and my time was faster than the seniors. I took my first intercontinental flight with my parents at 18 months, flew across the Atlantic alone at age 5, was on the radio with my father when I was 8, and won a poetry award at age 9.
Imposed excellence, fuelled by a perfectionist household, and the bypassing of my emotions, I was following orders; passionate about the arts. I was fearless; pushing limits, and boundaries.
Oblivious, it was weighing on me. I was too young to understand the impact of extreme stress.
In 2001, I gave birth at home, with no medical intervention. As a single parent, I broke glass ceilings, invested in property, and bought a classic Volvo 240—cash. My feats were vastly incomprehensible. I passed cars on my bike, played soccer with men, have been in car accidents that defied death…
Unknowingly addicted to adrenaline—a string of traumatic events—I crashed, and burned.
Stress can kill. We underestimate how deeply it affects us. Home was always my safe place, a retreat from the world. When I learned that certain things in my home were harmful, I changed them. I also decluttered, and created a haven—a preventive methodology that empowers the body, boosts the brain, and comforts the heart.
It is now my honour, and duty, to share it with you.
